Many of the IEEE 802 networking standards are available for
free online.

In addition to the 802.11 (Wi-Fi) standards, you might find
802.15 (personal-area networks, PANs, used by ZigBee) and
802.16 (WiMax) interesting.
802.16 might be interesting because it uses a centralized
base station, and so may be applicable to a repeater-based
MEP. 802.15 is nice because it is relatively small
(well, by IEEE standards -- it's still 305 pages long).
