A favorite fantasy of mine is small solar-powered "signposting"
transponders that would return some body of static or dynamic data on
demand. These could be used in a number of applications: as
navigational markers, as buffers for environmental sensors around
hazardous or sensitive sites, as read/write "data drops," as high-
capacity RFID on disaster-relief assets, or whatever. The
interrogators could be portable, mobile, air-mobile, fixed-steerable,
or whatever. The transponders would probably want to respond both to
a particular address and to an "any-call" signal... in the latter mode
they'd probably want to randomly stagger their bursts to minimize
"hidden station" collisions.
