[Mep-dev] A Simple "What If?"

The list that Timothy mentions has been mostly inactive for about a
year and a half now. There was a disagreement between the ARRL and the
HSMM 820.11 working group about something and it kind of floundered
around for a little and just simply died a slow quiet death. I have
never found out what the full reasons were or what caused them either.

If we want to plan on using IP addresses, we could possibly consider
using the block of IP addresses assigned for the AMPR.ORG network.
I have two assigned to me right now:
w8iss.ampr.org 44.102.48.63
and
w8iss.802.ampr.org 44.102.48.123
I got the 802 address when I was planning on setting up a HSMM network
here but found that there was lack of interest for it.

Jay Nugent, WB8TKL, is the chairman for the Michigan Digital Radio group
(MI-DRG) and hosts the http://www.mi-drg.org website with a lot of
useful information about the Michigan packet network, JNOS, and the
ampernet locally. Jay would probably consider helping out with assigning
Ip addresses and ampr.org aliases. He also has a write up on how to do a
localized HSMM network that is used at the Ann Arbor Field Day site to
help send packet NTS messages directly to our section manager. Jay also
is the local hamgate and hub in and out of the internet. Just telnet to
hamgate.washtenaw.mi-drg.org to give it a try.

As for converting 2.4GHz WiFi signals to another band, we wouldn't be
able to use just ANY transverter as there is one thing that the trans-
verter would have to be capable of first - being able to receive and
transmit at the same time or bidirectional as its termed. I personally
know of any transvreter in the amateur market that is capable of that.
There are plenty of bidirectional amplifiers on the market for 2.4GHz
right now. The cheapest I saw when I was looking was ninety nine dollars
for a one watt unit.

Here is a link for those that brought up about identification require-
ments if you are planning to use a Linux/Unix operating system:

http://home.satx.rr.com/wdubose/hsmm/Ping_Callsign_ID_HowTo.html

It works like a PING command but with the added extra of doing it every
10 minutes.
